Juan Manuel, Un Toque Latino en Houston

“Toda la música y los ritmos de Sudamérica los llevo en la sangre”, así nos dice el compositor y músico Colombiano Juan Manuel, cuando lo entrevistamos antes de una de sus presentaciones [que incluya ancla de noticias de Univision, Jorge Ramos]. Juan Manuel ha estado toda su vida inmerso en el mundo de la música; cuando niño recuerda una guitarra colgada en la pared de su casa, y a partir de ese momento, se convirtió en su fiel compañera. El define su música como universal: “Lo que hago esta lleno de autenticidad, basado en lo que pienso y en mis experiencias”. Su creación tiene influencia folclórica, flamenca, clásica, blues e incluso de ritmos Africanos y Asiáticos, sin embargo el jazz es siempre la base de su material.

Recientemente lanzo su CD Liberation, un nombre muy sugestivo que abarca armoniosamente los sonidos del piano, saxofón, tambores y guitarra eléctrica, entre otros instrumentos. Este trabajo refleja las intenciones del artista: “Mi deseo es que la gente se inspire escudando el disco y pueda mirar en su interior los regalos que Dios le ha dado; aquel don único que nos hace especiales y diferentes y sobre todo que puedan desarrollarlo y compartirlo con todo el mundo”. “Al liberarnos, nos abrimos y damos paso a nuestros talentos”. Liberation es el resultado de una expresión muy autentica del artista que contó con la participación de reconocidos músicos de Houston como David Caceres, Anthony Sapp, Rankin Peters, Buzz Smith y Chris Howland.

Liberation literalmente llego hasta las estrellas, asi es, en diciembre de 1999 su música acompaño a una misión de astronautas, por lo que voló 3.25 millones de millas en el espacio. Pero el éxito de este CD no ha detenido a Juan Manuel, por el contrario, esta ya trabajando en su nuevo material discográfico que se llamara Reunion. Lleva este nombre ya que para su composición se reunieron artistas y musicos que no se habian visto hace muchos anos; juntos volvieron a tocar y pronto estaran presentando un material de primera calidad. No hay duda que cuando el sentimiento, el talento y la tecnología se juntan, los resultados son explosivos.

Entre pregunta y pregunta de esta entrevista, Juan Manuel se encargo personalmente de revisar el sonido para su presentación, detalles que demuestran su profesionalismo y su interés de dar al publico lo mejor de si: “Mientras la gente me esta escuchando, yo también los escucho al ellos y siempre busco la manera de ofrecerles algo mejor”. Finalmente nos despedimos con un gran abrazo y con su mejor sonrisa, el nos dice: “quiero seguir compartiendo me música, es un compromiso que tengo con la vida misma de entregar un mensaje de paz y unión”.

Juan Manuel, A Touch of Latin Music in Houston

“I Carry in me all of South America’s music and rhythms.” That’s what Juan Manuel, the Colombian musician and composer told us in an interview with him before one of his performances [featuring Univision’s News Anchor, Jorge Ramos]. Juan Manuel has been immersed in the world of music all his life. As a child, he remembers a guitar hanging on a wall of his house, which since then has been his faithful partner. He defines his music as “universal”. “What I do is fully authentic, it’s based on what I think and in my experience.” His compositions have a lot of different influences: folklore, flamenco, classical, blues, African and Asian rhythms. But jazz is always at the base of what he creates.

Juan Manuel recently launched his new CD Liberation, a title that evokes the harmonious sounds of the piano, the sax, drums and the electric guitar. “I want people to get inspired when they listen to my music, so they search inside them for the gifts God has given them. I want them to find that especial gift that makes each of us different from everybody else, and even more importantly, that they develop and share this with everybody around them.” “When we are free, we open the door for our talents to reveal themselves.” Liberation is truly a very personal expression of the artist. The renowned Houstonian musicians David Caceres, Anthony Sapp, Rankin Peters, Buzz Smith and Chris Howland also participated in the production of the CD. Liberation literally reached the stars in December of 1999. Juan Manuel’s music accompanied a NASA mission and flew 3.25 million miles into space. But the success of his CD didn’t stop him, to the contrary; he is already working on his next production: Reunion. The name came from the way it was conceived: a group of musicians and artists who hadn’t seen each other in a long time got together to jam again, and soon they will be presenting new material of first class. There’s no doubt that then feelings, talent and technology come together the results can be exhilarating.

During the interview, Juan Manuel was personally checking the sound for his performance. His attention to detail gives evidence of his professionalism and desire to give the best to the audience. “While people are listening to me, I am also listening to them and looking for ways to offer them something better of me.” Finally, we said good-bye and with a great hug and with his biggest smile, he told us, “I want to continue sharing my music. It’s a life commitment I’ve made to communicate a message of peace and unity to the world.”
